Descale the shower head

When limescale clogs the holes in your shower head, the water is no longer distributed properly. Fortunately, you can easily solve this yourself by cleaning the shower head with vinegar.

Step 1: Disassemble

There is a hinge between the hose and the shower head that you can loosen. If there is a lot of lime on it, this can be difficult. You can then use pliers, but do not use too much force: this could cause the hinge to break. If there are brown spots around the connecting piece? First use an anti-rust agent. If there is a lot of white limescale on the hinge, loosen the shower head more quickly by spraying a little WD-40 on the hinge piece.

Step 2: Soaking in vinegar

Fill the sink or a bucket with water and add vinegar. The optimal water-vinegar ratio is one part water to two parts vinegar. The shower head must be completely submerged in water. Now all you have to do is wait for the next 24 hours.

Step 3: Rinse shower head

After a day of soaking, the lime is dissolved. Now rinse the shower head with cold water and reattach it to the shower hose. Finally, turn on the shower briefly to rinse away the last traces of vinegar and limescale from the shower head.

Frequently asked questions about descaling a shower head

How do I descale a shower head that is attached to the wall?
Sometimes it is not possible to unscrew the shower head from the hose, for example when it is mounted on the wall. Fortunately, it is still possible to soak the shower head in vinegar. All you need in this case is a plastic bag. Pour the vinegar-water mixture into this and tie it around the shower head.

How can I prevent a clogged shower head?

By drying the shower head with a cloth after showering, less water remains in the shower head. It is precisely this dried water that causes limescale. If you remove this every time after showering, the holes in the shower head will become less likely to become clogged.

Why is there limescale in my shower head?

Because the soil in the Netherlands is rich in lime and minerals, we find these in the tap water. Depending on the type of soil in your community, the water in your home will be harder or softer.
